About The Exchange Saleroom

The Exchange Saleroom first opened its doors in 1964 and was the brainchild of Chris Dee, a former senior partner in the firm. He had a lifelong interest in antiques that was developed further during his early working years when he was training to be a land agent with a large firm in Retford. That firm also had a Fine Art saleroom so when Chris returned to Driffield to join the family firm he persuaded his father Eric Dee and his partner Peter Atkinson to purchase a former garage that stood on land adjoining the Exchange Street office. A few years later planning was granted to build what is now the main showroom and in December 1964 the first sale was held.

Over fifty years on and the Exchange Saleroom is still going strong. It is the leading Fine Art saleroom in East Yorkshire with around twenty-six auctions held every year. Things have moved on considerably since those early days and the advent of the internet has played a large part in the marketing of every item that comes through the door.

In 2016 we started using the online live bidding platform thesaleroom.com to offer all lots to the national and global marketplace. That decision has proved to be the right one, with almost 40% of lots now selling to buyers on the internet. We have also seen a significant lift in the prices achieved and a drop in the number of unsold lots. This is particularly relevant to the ceramics sector where strong interest and highly competitive bidding comes on items that originate from China.
