Lancia's development programme aimed at transforming the boxy-shaped, Giugiaro-designed Delta hatchback into a competitive rally car had been necessitated by the banning of the Group B supercars at the end of 1986. Badged as the 'Delta HF 4WD' on its introduction in 1986, the model retained the Volumex blower initially before switching to a straightforward turbo when transformed into the legendary Integrale in 1987. Already a fine handling car courtesy of its tuned suspension, the HF moved up a class with the introduction of a state-of-the-art four-wheel-drive transmission incorporating Ferguson viscous couplings and a Torsen differential, split 56/44 front/rear. The latter would prove a supremely capable rally car yet in road trim remained a thoroughly practical family hatchback. Integrale performance was boosted further by the introduction of a 16-valve cylinder head for the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine in 1989, maximum power increasing to 200bhp and top speed to 220km/h.
It is with this car and its four successive evolutions (which by the term "4WD" pass to the name "Integrale") that Lancia began its unmatched victories in the rally scene: after five titles already made by the likes of the Stratos and Rally 037, with the Lancia Delta it will win the World Rally Championship for six consecutive times (1987-1992) while the drivers who drove the car won four titles: two with Miki Biasion (1988 and 1989) and two others with Juha Kankkunen (1987 and 1991).
XVS was bought by Miss A Stanford of Tulse Hill in London at the height of the Yuppie era, one of the most iconic cars of the era, on the 29th August 1987, from John Hosmer Motors of Bovingdon, Herts. First serviced on the 7th September at 881 miles, then 26th March 1988 at 4,461, she was bought by our vendors partner on the 14th August 1988 with a mileage of 10,000 from the same dealership for ?14,995 who part exchanged an Audi 80 Sport. They changed the ownership on the 18th into his name. The next service was the 16th August at 10,262, 5th September 1989 at 20,242, 26th April 1990 at 26,051, 22nd November 1991 at 35,077, with a new cam belt. The next MOT was at 41,347 miles in November 1992.
She was now showing her age and went to Panel Craft of Aylesbury for minor surgery, including a respray, in April 1993. MOT'd in November 1993 at 47,257 she was no longer the main family car so the mileage was only 52,565 at the next MOT in October 1994, in August 1995 she went for major surgery at Panel Craft; including front wings, doors and a respray at a cost of ?2,318. The next MOT was at 53,019 in November 1995 and 54,369 in November 1996.
She was then laid up for a period reappearing in March 2012 with a major service at 55,149 miles, including new cam belt, brake master cylinder, discs and pads, exhaust, and full rust proofing. MOT'd at 55,150, in 201
