Despite the beautiful weather outside the saleroom was full of people and although several bids were taken from the internet, interest in attending the sales has not waned. Many were quite happy to sit and wait for the Clock section. Some very good prices were attained and most of the clocks sold at or above the estimates. A late 19th century Continental porcelain case timepiece almost doubled the estimate to make £600 and a late 19th century burr walnut cased bracket clock with eight day movement striking to two gongs 15 ¼" high sold for £1300; a 19th century French ormolu mantel clock with eight day movement striking to gong, with a Sevres style porcelain dial and sides painted with romantic figures 13 ½" high made £1000, whilst a brass cased four glass Atmos mantel clock by Jeeger-Lecoultre, 1970s with case and instructions 8 ¾" high went under the hammer for £520.
As in recent sales most of the silver lots sold at or above the estimates. A George III tankard with scroll loop handle 3 ½" high, London 1812, 6.45 ozs, made £220; an Edwardian cut glass claret jug, Sheffield 1909, £160; a George IV coffee pot, maker's mark C P& W ?, London 1824, £360; a Victorian coffee pot inscribed "JCFR Dec 17th 1921", London 1857, 26.93 ozs, 11" high, sold at the top end of the estimate for £290. Continental silver in the Jewellery Section also made very good prices. A German silver and enamelled buckle by Theodor Fahrner, marked T F Depose 900, sold for £800 and a Norwegian silver pendant by Bjorn Figurd Ostern, stamped D A Norway, Sterling 925s INV BSO, 2" wide x 2 ¼" , £160.
In the Jewellery Section gold continues to attain high prices: An 18 ct white gold necklace 31 ½" long, 35 grams sold for £560. an Art Deco diamond and sapphire ring on 14ct white gold shank, size J, stamped 585 £600; a sapphire and diamond ring emerald cut blue sapphire in a raised diamond studded claw setting flanked by baguette cut diamonds on 18K white gold shank, sapphire 1.59ct, size N, £1250; A tigers eye pendant with 18 ct gold surround stamped 750/18K, German, 2 ¾" high. Watches and wristwatches also made strong prices: A lady's Victorian pocket watch movement by J Miller, Glasgow with Chester hallmark 1865, £260; a gentleman's Tudor (Rolex) chronograph wristwatch in original case and box with guarantee, dated 2004, £650; a lady's Victorian fob watch in 14K gold outer case £100 and a gentleman's IWC wristwatch £370.
Other Lots of interest included: A Chinese brass censer with a cover of pierced dragons, and the body cast with mythical creatures on scrolled bracket feet, 6 ½" high £500; a walking stick with Kepkura dog's head handle, 37 ¾" long £180 and a hazel wood hill tick with carved rhododendron goose head handle 48" long £170; Three Conway Stewart fountain pens sold for £100; a 19th century ebonised and boulle writing slope £280;An early 19th century cavalry sabre the curved 32" blade inscribed "Osborn", with single steel stirrup guard, £400; an Infantry officer's dress sword, 32" £280
There were one or two surprises in the Miscellaneous Section with a Chinese porcelain rectangular covered vase selling for £740 and an early 19th century Chinese export charger 18" diameter, £400. Other good prices included £220 for a pair of late 19th century Cantonese vases painted with exotic birds and flora 10" high. A Victorian Stourbridge green glass dump 6 ¾" high made £150 and a pair of the same £240.
Sales in the Furniture section were patchy, but as usual good quality pieces continue to make strong prices. The following lots all exceeded their estimates: An Art Deco walnut sideboard £260; a Victorian mahogany triple wardrobe £850; a George III mahogany linen press £680; an early 20th century oak hall stand with satin and fruit wood Art Nouveau style inlay £400 and an Arts & Crafts mahogany rocking chair £320.
Even though the watercolour and oil section was not large good prices were achieved: A gouache by Robert Chappell ((1870-1940) SS China in full sail 17" x 24" £1150; a watercolour by Frederick William Booty (1840-1924) Staithes near Whitby with figures £950; three oils by Jack Rigg (1927-) one of ship in full sail off Flamborough coast £280, another Yorkshire fishing trawler £320 and a view of Filey with 1960s tractor pulling in a fishing board £820; the Cathedral Doorway by Frederick W Elwell (1870-1958), £650; Rough seas at Bempton Cliffs by Walter Goodin (1907-1992) made £750 and an interior of Bayle Gate, Bridlington by the same artist made £1350.
